Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) – Episode 134 – Decades of Horror 1980s

“There’s a legend ’round here. A killer buried, but not dead. A curse on Crystal Lake, a death curse: Jason Voorhees’ curse.” Our narrator (Walt “Crazy Ralph” Gorney) details the legend of Jason Voorhees. After being stuck at the bottom of Camp Crystal Lake in the last film, Jason is awoken by a young lady named Tina (Lar Park Lincoln) with psychic abilities. It’s essentially Carrie vs. Jason… at least that’s the intent. So is this a slashing entry in the franchise or is Pamela going to warn her son that “They’re All Gonna Laugh at You?” Listen to find out!

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 134 – Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Released in 1988, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood came out near the end of the slasher genre’s reign. It was a time when the MPAA became more critical of violence, causing the iconic kills the franchise was known for to be cut down severely. Director John Carl Buechler has been publically against how this turned out and we’ve only seen daily footage of the kills. Some of them were pretty gruesome, but alas not to be. Which makes some of the teen stuff all the more of a slog to get through.

Luckily, Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani are here to take a closer look at Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. All of them appreciate the final fight with Tina and the ambition of having a superpowered heroine fight Jason. Especially when that Jason is played for the first time by iconic stuntman Kane Hodder. Yet, there’s plenty of issues to have with the editing and lack originality amongst the supporting cast. All this and more is discussed on Decades of Horror 1980s!

Review: What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

No surprise here: Dave, Thomas and Doc all sing praises for the vampire horror comedy What We Do In The Shadows. The grue-crew dive into what makes this film hit the high moments with laughs and silly fun. Thomas spotlights co-director Jemain Clement in the role of Vladislav while Doc appreciates the understated comedy of Stu (as played by Stuart Rutherford). David, of course, adores the Nosferatu look and feel of the elder vampire, Petyr. Find out why you should see this film.

Review: Kingsman The Secret Service (2015)

Colin Firth kills it as the suave but deadly Harry Hart in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman The Secret Service as they take a satiric stab at every concept buried in the tropes of James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer. Doc has admiration for Gazelle as played by Sofia Boutella. Thomas patiently waits for Doc to finish stammering about the effects and the comedy to discuss Samuel L. Jackson as the film’s villain, the billionaire named Valentine.

On the sequel front, the producers behind the upcoming Friday the 13th sequel discuss how the script will tackle the supernatural underpinnings to Jason Voorhees. James Franco headlines Stephen King’s 11/22/63. Who make up the new supergroup The Hollywood Vampires? Why Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and…Johnny Depp.

Maleficent (2014)
The grue-crew drag Dave kicking and screaming (or rather snoring, ha!) into watching the latest high profile live-action fantasy offering from the Disney powerhouse, Maleficent. Angelina Jolie scores big with her incredible performance as the title character. But the entire crew is hard pressed to praise much else, except maybe the cinematography and effects work.

Horror News Radio Episode 56 – The Quiet Ones

The Quiet Ones ushers the return of Hammer Films to the theaters after the success of their last film The Woman in Black. Doc and Santos dig the Seventies feels and Vixen returns to share her thoughts on the first horror film she has seen where she did not have to cover her eyes. Yeah, there is some debate on how scary it actually is. Sigh.

Doc discusses the slasher film Camp Dread in this week’s What Have You Been Watching segment while Dave checks in with the Horror News of the Week with news about Friday the 13th and Penny Dreadful.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  The Black Saint’s Horror Trivia Contest continues this week with the Anchor Bay Entertainment Blu-Ray Giveaway: Mr. Jones.

The Quiet Ones (2014)
What the heck happened? A great idea and a great cast squandered for a mediocre horror film – although The Quiet Ones is a tight, entertaining little thriller. The scares are forced and few and far between but the acting is terrific with Jared Harris and Olivia Cooke getting most of the recognition. But what happened to the scares? Listen to the grue-crew investigate during the podcast to find out.

Horror News of the Week for 04/28/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with his favorite horror icon making it to serial television, Jason Voorhees with a Friday the 13th show. The trailer for As Above, So Below may have been the scariest thing about The Quiet Ones – d’oh.  Kevin Smith returns to horror with his Tusk cast in tow to create Anti-Claus, as holiday horror anthology. Maybe. Santos nearly throws up with the disclaimer that Universal’s Dracula Untold described as a “family fantasy film.” Oh, dear. Showtime is presenting the first episode of their horror show Penny Dreadful a full month ahead of its premiere date.

What Have You Been Watching: Camp Dread
Danielle Harris and Eric Roberts lead the cast for Harrison Smith’s slasher film, Camp Dread. Doc steps in with this week’s What Have You Been Watching segment to review the film trying to convince Santos he needs to give it a try if not for Roberts deliriously campy delivery then for the twist ending.

Monster Movie Podcast – Episode 64 – Friday the 13th (1980)

Join us this week as we face down one wickedly sick Momma Voorhees in the granddaddy of all slasher films, Friday the 13th (1980). Camp Crystal Lake has attracted a new group of camp counselors to resurrect the grounds long closed after a series of horrific murders and given the nickname Camp Blood. Unbeknownst to them the killer still lurks in the woods and begins killing them off one by one.

Sean S. Cunningham’s simply plotted but intensely paced gory shocker with FX work from Tom Savini changed the face of horror films starting the slasher craze only hinted at from its inspiration, Halloween (1978).

“Kill her, Mommy! Kill her! Don’t let her get away, Mommy! Don’t let her live!”
” I won’t, Jason.  I won’t!”
