Night of the Lepus (1972) – Episode 59 – Decades of Horror 1970s

“Rabbits aren’t your bag, Roy.” It’s pretty safe to say rabbits aren’t anyone’s bag in Night of the Lepus, especially the pseudo-savage, overgrown, mutant versions in this film. The Black Saint was unable to join us for this episode and Doc Rotten is still on hiatus, diligently working on the next issues of the Gruesome Magazine quarterly print and electronic editions. Sometimes, you just can’t do everything you want to do, can you, guys? In the interim, your regular host, Jeff Mohr, is joined by the capable and knowledgeable Bill Mulligan, film director, and Chad Hunt, comic book artist/writer and co-host of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast. Join them as they weave their way through the killer rabbits of Night of the Lepus.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 59 – Night of the Lepus (1972)

Night of the Lepus is director William F. Claxton’s only entry in the horror film. Most of his experience is in the western genre, so it’s no surprise that most of the cast are frequent performers in westerns. Highly recognizable leads and supporting cast are played by Janet Leigh, Rory Calhoun, Stuart Whitman, DeForest Kelley, and Paul Fix, who all give it the old college try, but they don’t have much with which to work.

The screenplay is written by Don Holliday and Gene R. Kearney and is based on The Year of the Angry Rabbit (1964), an Australian, comic/horror/science fiction novel by Russell Braddon. Though the plot is outrageous, the novel is appreciated for its comic shadings. In Night of the Lepus, however, the filmmakers forsake any attempt at humor and go straight for outright horror, a fatal mistake. Unfortunately, no matter how ominous the script or intense the acting, the special effects are not up to the task of inciting horror from domestic rabbits performing on miniature sets.

Despite its flaws, Night of the Lepus still holds a special place in the hearts of the members of your faithful Grue Crew. Jeff Mohr has on an ongoing bromance with Rory Calhoun. Though he agrees it is a terrible film, Bill Mulligan professes a love for many of the images in Night of the Lepus and uses them in his party videos. Now there’s a party we’d love to attend! Chad Hunt, well, Chad Hunt can’t figure out why, but when he’s channel surfing and runs across Night of the Lepus, he can’t keep from pausing to watch the proverbial trainwreck.

Event Horizon (1997) – Episode 7 – Decades of Horror 1990s

“You can’t leave. She won’t let you.” Sam Neill as Dr. William Weir warns as the intrepid crew of the Lewis and Clark tries to escape the endless abandoned void of the Event Horizon. Director Paul W.S. Anderson’s first dip into the horror genre is one that directly clashes with the endless void of space. Where terror can’t be heard in the airless vacuum of the outside world. It’s almost like Alien… Meets Hellraiser. Or a hell of a lot of other things meets Hellraiser. Can Thomas Mariani and his own intrepid guest escape the horrors of space? Only time will tell.

Decades of Horror 1990s
Episode 07 – Event Horizon (1997)

Celebrating 20 years since its release, Event Horizon presents an interesting crossroads for big budget horror. Coming out right after the death nail of the slasher genre yet before films like Blade or Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil franchise took the genre to ridiculous actions heights, Event Horizon is a curious beast of pop culture pastiche. You’ve got bits of AlienThe Shining2001 A Space Odyssey, Lovecraftian horror, Galaxy of Terror and so much other stuff wrapped into one bizarre package. One that was clearly sliced on the cutting room floor as much as the doomed crew of the Lewis and Clark end up being. Yet, despite the clear homage influences, there’s really no other film like Event Horizon. It’s a big budget gorefest with a cross reference of character actor talent like Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne throwing everything at the screen and seeing what sticks. Surprisingly, it’s a more favorable ratio than you’d think.

Joining Thomas on this mission is Will Torres. Will may have been at the mercy of a sloppy internet connection. Damn Skype. However, his knack for snark and quick wit still shines through as he and Thomas list out the various homages Anderson sneaks, wonder how arousing the infamous blood orgy video really is and try to link together the missing character beats lost to the severe edits. Things may be choppy in terms of audio quality, but it doesn’t stop Will and Thomas from descending into space madness aboard the barely functioning ship that is Decades of Horror 1990s. Seriously, it’s being kept together by duct tape and gum. You can read more of Will’s antics via his twitter account Nazhair.

Review: What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

No surprise here: Dave, Thomas and Doc all sing praises for the vampire horror comedy What We Do In The Shadows. The grue-crew dive into what makes this film hit the high moments with laughs and silly fun. Thomas spotlights co-director Jemain Clement in the role of Vladislav while Doc appreciates the understated comedy of Stu (as played by Stuart Rutherford). David, of course, adores the Nosferatu look and feel of the elder vampire, Petyr. Find out why you should see this film.

Review: Kingsman The Secret Service (2015)

Colin Firth kills it as the suave but deadly Harry Hart in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman The Secret Service as they take a satiric stab at every concept buried in the tropes of James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer. Doc has admiration for Gazelle as played by Sofia Boutella. Thomas patiently waits for Doc to finish stammering about the effects and the comedy to discuss Samuel L. Jackson as the film’s villain, the billionaire named Valentine.

On the sequel front, the producers behind the upcoming Friday the 13th sequel discuss how the script will tackle the supernatural underpinnings to Jason Voorhees. James Franco headlines Stephen King’s 11/22/63. Who make up the new supergroup The Hollywood Vampires? Why Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and…Johnny Depp.

What Have You Been Watching: The Atticus Institute (2015)

Seemingly out of nowhere comes a small, independent found footage possession thriller called The Atticus Institute. This film is a rare treat, a movie that treats its subject matter with imagination and respect creating a thrilling and engaging horror tale. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten both join in to champion this early 2015 favorite.

Review: The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2015)

What happens when there is very little “Woman in Black” in The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death movie? According to Thomas and The Black Saint, “Ample time to take a nap.” For many of the grue-crew, the Hammer sequel proves to be a snooze-fest; while for a few on the show and for Mrs. Dreher (co-host Dave’s better half), the film offers some entertaining Gothic horror romance. Listen and decide for yourself…does the first horror film of 2015 have anything to offer?

What Have You Been Watching: Pieces of Talent

Based on a recommendation of HNR listener and fan, Donnie H., Doc reviews the independent horror feature from North Carolina film maker Joe Stauffer. High praise for the director, the cinematography and for the film’s stars: David Long and Kristi Ray. The Black Saint backs Doc up with news that the film won multiple awards at the New York City Horror Film Festival in 2013 including Best Director and Best Screenplay.
